Lux Beauty Lounge Eyelash Extension Frequently Asked Questions
What are eyelash extensions?
Eyelash extensions are single strands of synthetic, silk, or mink eyelashes (we only use cruelty-free synthetic mink) ranging in size from 6mm to 17mm and are curved to replicate the natural eyelash. Extensions are applied one at a time to each of your natural eyelashes using a specially formulated, semi-permanent glue that will not irritate the eye nor damage the natural lash; however, allergic reactions to the glue are possible so please speak with your technician if you have concerns. The result is a thicker/fuller, darker, and perfectly curled, beautiful look. Eyelash extensions are perfect everyday wear or special occasions.
What are eyelash extensions made of?
There are three types of eyelash extensions: synthetic, silk, and mink. We use cruelty-free synthetic mink lashes, which are made from PolyButylene Terephthalate (PBT). They are precision-made, distinctively lighter, softer, more durable, and more flexible than conventional synthetic lashes.
How long does it take to apply lash extensions?
Applying a full set of eyelash extensions takes about two hours and can be maintained year-round with touch-ups recommended every two to four weeks. You will be laying comfortably on a facial table with your eyes closed. Your technician will then apply an under-eye gel pad to cover your lower lashes from getting stuck together with your upper lashes. The application process itself is pain-free and relaxing and most clients fall asleep during the process. If you experience any burning or discomfort during the procedure, causing your eyes to tear or making you cry, this is a huge red flag and you should certainly speak up. You may need to have your technician change the glue.
How often do I need to get last extensions redone?
Lash extensions last through a full growth cycle of natural eyelashes, typically six to eight weeks. Since each lash extension is attached to a single eyelash, they will fall out naturally along with the natural growth cycle of each lash. That said, because each person’s lash growth is somewhat variable (just like hair growth), we suggest light lash maintenance (fills) every two to four weeks to maintain a full look. Other individual variables may also cause extensions to fall out sooner, such as exposure to steam.
When an inexperienced professional applies lashes, he or she often applies one synthetic lash to three to four natural lashes, causing clumps or the lash to break and fall out. In addition, your lashes might fall out if you pick at them or try to pull them out yourself, which is a big no-no. But if you avoid those two problems, your lashes should stay intact.
Before beginning the process, we will consult with you over the style you are interested in and what you'd like to achieve with your lash extensions. We will also examine your eyelashes to determine what your lashes will be able to "hold" with regards to thickness and length of the extensions as everyone's lashes vary in strength. We will also take into consideration your eye shape when creating your look. Overall looks are natural but can be made to be more dramatic if desired.
How do I choose the look I want?
Can I shower or swim right away? Are there products I should absolutely avoid?
Yes! The bonding agent we use is waterproof and allows you to shower or swim immediately after your appointment. Special care is required for those who participate in strenuous sweating activities such as hot yoga. However, do not wash your eye area for the first 24 hours after each application.
We don't recommend it. Wearing mascara in addition to extensions can actually shorten the lifespan of your extensions. Long-term use of mascara with your extensions may lead to product build-up. Not only will this get very clump but it may result in an eye infection. Waterproof mascara or any other type of oil-based mascara can also dissolve the bonding agent of your extensions causing them to fall off sooner. Similarly, using eyelash curlers on your extensions could possibly break your own natural lashes.
Is it okay to also wear mascara or use an eyelash curler?
The biggest myth is that lash extensions ruin your own lashes. They do not. If applied correctly and properly, they are safe and do not ruin the health of your natural lashes. Be sure not to rub your eyes or tug or pull on the extensions because this can cause lash loss and even damage to your natural lashes.
The FDA does not currently regulate eyelash extensions. Because of the sensitive nature of the lashes and the surrounding area, finding someone who is certified to apply the lashes is definitely a must. Professionals use professional products and have been properly trained to apply the lashes without damaging your natural lashes or more importantly, your eyes.
Just like you would with a hairstylist, research who you want to go to and how long they have been working as a technician. Look at before-and-after photos, read reviews and always make sure they are licensed and lash-certified.
